Young Families

The Vaughan Community Health Centre (VCHC) provides a variety of health promotion activities and educational workshops aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of children aged 0 to 12 and their families. These programs focus on building knowledge and skills in areas such as child development, safety, and healthy relationships. Families participating in these activities have access to resources and support while engaging in a broad range of interactive and educational experiences.

Winter 2018 Programs

Brighter Beginnings – AOK (Ages 0-6 years)

  • Day: Thursday
  • Dates: Jan. 11 – Mar. 29
  • Time: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

This program offers parents and caregivers the chance to connect with others, while their children play together. Participants can attend workshops, share stories, borrow child development and parenting resources, or simply enjoy playtime with their children. The program emphasizes school readiness, skill-building, storytelling, and creative activities. Please note that there will be no session on Jan. 4; the program resumes on Jan. 11.

Ready for Success (Ages 6-8/Grades 1-3 & Ages 9-11/Grades 4-6)

  • Day: Tuesday
  • Dates: Oct. 17, 2017 – Mar. 27, 2018
  • Time: Group 1: 3:30 PM – 4:30 PM; Group 2: 4:45 PM – 5:45 PM

Tutoring and program activities are facilitated by York University’s Teacher Candidates and VCHC staff. The group tutoring sessions, with a ratio of one tutor to five children, focus on improving literacy and numeracy skills. Children also participate in fun, educational activities that promote cooperation, time management, and problem-solving skills.
Program Eligibility: Free for families with an annual household income of $70,000 or less (based on a family of four). Caregivers will need to provide a notice of assessment as proof of income.

Terrific Two’s (22-38 months)

  • Day: Tuesday
  • Dates: Jan. 9 – Mar. 6
  • Time: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

In the early years, children learn through active engagement, observation, experimentation, and social interactions. As they grow, they develop self-regulation, focus, and planning skills, all influenced by the cultural values and practices of their environment. Registration begins on November 27th, 2017 at 10:00 AM.

Early Literacy and Numeracy Program

  • Day: Thursday
  • Date: Mar. 1
  • Time: 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Children exposed to songs, rhymes, and stories often become better readers, thinkers, and learners. Join Jill, our Early Literacy Specialist, for a fun and interactive Literacy Circle. Registration is ongoing, and new participants are welcome.

Triple P Parenting Education Series

  • Day: Tuesday
  • Dates: Mar. 13, 20, 27
  • Time: 9:30 AM – 11:00 AM

This series offers simple and practical strategies to help parents confidently manage their children’s behavior, prevent problems, and build strong, healthy relationships.

  • Session 1: Raising Resilient Children
  • Session 2: Separation Issues
  • Session 3: Independent Eating

Registration begins on February 5th, 2018 at 10:00 AM.
